During the run of my installation "Silent. Silenced. Silence", I asked gallery viewers: What silences you?

People selected a word and either a black or gold hood, which prevented them from expressing a facial gesture or seeing gallery onlookers as their photo was taken.

There are modes-of-being that cause us to remain or appreciate the silent, whether we have been made speechless by regime, consumerism, prestige, or awe. 

A few friends suggested black hooded heads were politically incorrect. I listened and began to witness my own silencing. Political Correctness does have a silencing effect. Nonetheless, I continued..

I was working in the print shop at Mass Moca. The radio was on. I heard the Speaker of the House tell Senator Elizabeth Warren to shut up and sit down; then the Senate voted to silence her. 

The impact of a woman being publicly silenced compelled me to paint a black hood over the faces I was drawing and to contemplate the emotion of being silenced.

Putting a hood over a fellow human's head might deliver a feeling of power; of consuming other so that you could be greater than...and it is also evil to force a person who has a soul like your own to be a victim.

Silencing taken to the end is a primitive fear.

Can you shut up and be quiet?

A hood over a human head identifies that person as a silenced, single member of an oppressed group.
